Desert Island Supply Company (DISCO): Writing with great success

I love the clever name Desert Island Supply Company. It reminds me of a group activity I did in an Organizational Development class in college.

It poses the question: What would you save for your survival if you only had 30 minutes to grab 10 items from a ship wreck? Of course, there are several different varieties of the question. But the main focus is that is poses a question that requires group thought, planning, organization and synergy.

It also encourages creativity. Don’t think for a moment that chosing a rope will only accomplish a few things on that island…the possibilities are endless.

Isn’t that what writing is all about? Endless possibilities.

My daughter recently attended The Pen That Dreams workshop. When she arrived, she was curious. When she left, she was empowered!!!  She has started a poetry journal.  That is what DISCO is all about, empowering young writers.

Here is a sample from the workshop.  I Lost My Mind Just Now: A Poem

If you are a homeschooler or are interested in giving your child the best opportunties to enhance their creativity and encourage expression through writing, check out DISCO.

I’m proud that Birmingham, in fact, Woodlawn, a small suburb rich with history and endless possiblities itself, is the home of DISCO.   But all grassroot movements need a start. If you want to help, simply click this link.

And it is a perfect name for a writing center that encourages one to go beyond the obvious, dream in pen, and imagine in prose.

Check out what a fellow blog mom has to say about DISCO here!
