Adrian Christine (Christy) Addaway Golden

September 16, 1970 to January 24, 2010

Adrian Christine died peacefully on January 24, 2010 at approximately 3:00pm. She was lovingly surrounded by family and friends. Her death was very peaceful and loving as her family and best friends prayed and talked her to Heaven’s door then lovingly, yet sorrowfully said goodbye to her. Not once was she in pain through the process and at all times, she knew the awesome, unexplainable power of love that surrounded her.

She had surgery in her nasal and sinus area on Tuesday. On Friday, a possible blood clot released, traveled through her system and her heart stopped. She was taken to St. Vincent’s East ER. She coded a second time. She was placed on Life Support. On Sunday, her family made the difficult decision to let her go. There was simply no brain activity or quality of life. Christy would have wanted to be off the machines and not linger in this way. She had expressed this so many times in her life.

But it is not her death that makes me write this for her, it is her life.

Adrian Christine, known as Christy for many of us, was a hilarious, outrageous, compassionate, full of life person.  She was stubborn and she would proudly want me to write that! She loved with her whole heart. She was passionate about animals. She loved a good laugh. She was a deeply spiritual person yet few people knew this about her. She loved to ride with the convertable top down on her car and feel the wind in her face. She always told me it felt like freedom. She was deeply drawn to the Gulf especially the beach in Panama City where she spent so many days with family and friends throughout her life.

She once told me if she could leave behind a memory of herself, she would want it to be laughter. She loved to laugh and play jokes on people.  She loved to wave at total strangers just to see them react. She was a flirt and became so endearing to so many just by her personality and ability to reach out to anyone and make friends.

When a person comes into this world, we have no idea of the power of their presence or even the purpose of their life.  But I believe we all have a purpose, a meaning, a mission. Be it an infant or old man, all human life contains the ability to love. Christy knew this and discussed this many times with me through her life. Being a witness to her death, praying her to Heaven’s door, and feeling her spirit release, I can tell you this, her purpose, her meaning, and her mission is not complete. And her memory will live on through her friends and even through the children she knew and loved.

When you hear children laughing, think of her. When you see a sunrise on the beach, think of her. When you see the top down on a convertible and the driver’s hair blowing in the wind, think of her. She is in freedom and is among a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Christy’s greatest gift to us is that of her beautiful, intelligent daughter, Megan Elizabeth Addaway.  I thank God everyday for this precious life.

If you would like to leave a comment or memory of her, please feel free to do so. These comments will be printed and made into a special book for Megan.

I also invite  you to a public Memorial Service this Saturday at 2:00pm at Bradford Park on EDWARDS LAKE ROAD. We will meet at the first field by the playground. This is a very informal celebration. Please, if you have children, PLEASE bring them. There is nothing more that Christy would have wanted than to hear the laughter of children as we comfort each other. Please bring a balloon or two in the color of Purple or Pink (or whatever you think Christy would have wanted) and we will have Sharpie Markers available for you to write her a message. You may also bring cards that will be placed in a memory box and presented to Megan.

We will say a prayer, share our memories, then release the balloons to her. This is a special ceremony that we personally shared together with my young daughters at my father’s grave on several occasions through the years. She always loved it.

And finally, when you say a prayer, remember her and her family.  Take an extra moment each day to say I love you to your friends and family. And when you are lonely or need a laugh, think of my best friend, Adrian Christine.

God bless, Nanci Neighbors Scarpulla

Christy, thanks to FaceBook, you and I reconnected. It was great being able to chat with you and even talk to you on the phone. Please know that you will always be my friend. I love you!! Leia

Megan, my last FB chat with Christy made her laugh. She remembered and was able to finish my little “cheer” my dad taught me when I was very little. Ask you grandmother about this cheer and she will remember it too. When you want to think of your mother smiling and laughing, say this cheer to yourself…”Horse’s butt and cow’s titties. We are the girls from the Magic City. Yay Birmingham!” I also used this cheer when I Googled her and found an e-mail address. She completed it for me then, too.

I would sing that as I skipped down the road to Christy’s house to play with her all day. I will miss her too.

  7. I would like to take this moment to give Adrian’s family and friends my deepest sympathy. I know that she will be greatly missed by all of them. I did not know her, but knowing friends that knew her made me feel as if she was a dear friend of mine. I was so saddened to hear the news of her passing away, but just know that she will have a chance at a resurrection and a hope for everlasting life here on earth again which should give all of her friends and family including myself, happiness and joy of knowing this.

Once again, you have my deepest sympathy in this time of sorrow and pain…

    Love,

    Valerie

Nanci – This is a very beautiful tribute to Christy. I know you must miss her like crazy. Christy and I had reconnected through FB. My most fun memory of her was when she and I camped out all night for concert tickets back in 1989. We had such a fun and crazy time doing that! My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. Hang in there. Love, Chris
